Review: Marked by PC Cast & Kristin Cast

Marked is the first book in the House of Night series by PC Cast and her daugher Kristin Cast. It's a young adult novel (which I seem to be addicted to lately!)

Here's a synopsis from Barnes and Noble

Enter the dark, magical world of The House of Night, a world very much like our own, except here vampyres have always existed. Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird has just been Marked as a fledgling vampyre and joins the House of Night, a school where she will train to become an adult vampire. That is, if she makes it through the Change--and not all of those who are Marked do. It sucks to begin a new life, especially away from her friends, and on top of that, Zoey is no average fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the vampyre Goddess Nyx. Zoey discovers she has amazing powers, but along with her powers come bloodlust and an unfortunate ability to Imprint her human ex-boyfriend. To add to her stress, she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers: When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

I have to admit that a couple things bothered me about this book right away. The spelling of 'vampyre' was one. The other was more major - the style of the writing. It's written with a very stereotypical 'teen' style.

But otherwise, once I got into the book and got used to the style (I did roll my eyes a few times), I found that I was once again, hooked. This is much different than the other vampire stories I've been reading. Most of the first half of the book was spent explaining things, but once I got about halfway through, it got a lot more interesting, and I'm looking forward to reading the next books (which I picked up today!) and getting into some more action!

**SPOILERS**
I'm interested to see what happens with Erik in the next books. I'm not sure if I believe that he's really a good guy. Also will be interesting to see what Aphrodite's roll is in the next book.

Rated: 3.5/5 (I expect these books to get better, and I expect to get more used to the writing style, so don't count this one out yet!)

  1. I need to read this one. It's burning a hole in my TBR pile. I have one more ARC to read and review and then will read this one.
