Review: Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Uglies is the first book in a series by Scott Westerfeld. It's a young adult book (I'm hooked on these lately!).

Here's the synopsis, from Barnes and Noble:

Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.
But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world -- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

I had a hard time putting this book down. The whole idea of "uglies" and "pretties" was really interesting, and I had to find out what happened to Tally! I'll be starting the next book in the series today!! A quick read, lots of action and surprises!

**SPOILERS**
I SO wanted Tally to tell Shay, David, and the others that she was a spy when she first got there. Every day that went by that she was there with them, I got more nervous about what was going to happen when they found out. I loved the ending, and can't wait to find out what happens when Tally becomes a Pretty! Will she find Peris and want to stay with him? Will David's mother be able to fix the brain lesions? Will David forgive her? What will happen to Shay? Can't wait!!

Rated: 4.5/5

  1. Every time you review a book I'm like "Oh I have that one on my bookshelf...I'm going to read that next." It's so funny how much our taste in books is the same :)
